Stones to Stonehenge - Peg's Travels 1973

Of all my grandmother's travelogues so far, her trip to Brussels, Brugge, Amsterdam, and England in 1973 is perhaps the most interesting.

Rolling Stones and Stonehenge

When I delve into each travelogue, my heart warms from her sense of adventure, especially when reading in these post-pandemic, travel revenge times.

But the four photo albums she used to document this trip - Stones to Stonehenge - are filled with wonder and adventure.

Perhaps the most fantastic adventure involved an unassuming stay at Hotel Amigo in Brussels, where they had stayed on their previous 1972 trip.

What was unusual about this stay was the other guests at the hotel.

As Peg sat down late one night in the lobby to write for the travelogue you can read here, none other than The Rolling Stones and their "well-mannered" entourage ambled by, before their famous Brussels Affair concerts.

The Stones were in Brussels to play at the Forest National Arena in October 1973, unable to enter France, as Keith Richards had been temporarily banned from visiting the country after being charged with drug possession by a French court.

The concert later spawned the 2011 live album Brussels Affair (Live 1973).

Peg's travels continued on to other sites, seeing many people and places including Stonehenge and Coventry Cathedral with husband Murray and friend Lois from California along for the journey.

Viewers of The Crown may enjoy the trip Peg made to Buckingham Palace when she witnessed Queen Elizabeth II and Winston Churchill's widow depart for an unveiling of a statue dedicated to the late Prime Minister.

Think what you will of the Monarchy and Churchill, the fortune Peg enjoyed to witness history - whether statues or stones, or Rolling Stones - was grand.

I hope you enjoy this chapter, the last of her travelogues from Europe.

Next week, the Caribbean.
